About the Federation

Comprehensive Overview

The European Defense Federation (EDF) is a non-profit association bringing together defense industry stakeholders, manufacturers, and dual-use technology innovators from across the European Union and associated countries. Established in Bavaria, Germany—a region historically central to Europe’s defense and security ecosystem—the Federation operates at the intersection of industrial capability, strategic autonomy, and defense innovation.

Mission and Purpose

The core mission of the EDF is to strengthen European defense cooperation, industrial competitiveness, and innovation leadership. It serves as a unifying voice for defense companies of all sizes, promoting common interests in Brussels and across national capitals. The Federation actively engages with EU institutions, NATO bodies, national ministries of defense, and research centers to shape a policy environment that supports industrial growth, technological sovereignty, and operational readiness.

Strategic Activities

The European Defense Federation undertakes a wide range of activities:

  • Advocacy and Representation
EDF represents the collective voice of its members in European and transatlantic defense forums. It provides expert policy recommendations, participates in public consultations, and builds strategic alliances to ensure the defense industry’s interests are reflected in legislation, funding frameworks, and capability planning.
  • Industrial Cooperation and Consortium Facilitation
The Federation plays a pivotal role in fostering collaboration among its members through matchmaking, consortium formation, and joint participation in EU-funded programs, including those under the European Defence Fund (EDF), Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO), and Horizon Europe.
  • Innovation and Research Promotion
EDF supports the acceleration of innovation by connecting members with research institutions, think tanks, and technology developers. The Federation encourages the development and deployment of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, space systems, advanced materials, and secure communications.
  • Project Management and Implementation
Leveraging a network of experts and member organizations, EDF assists in the structured development and implementation of cooperative defense projects. This includes proposal development, administrative coordination, compliance management, and performance tracking across multi-national initiatives.
  • Capacity Building and Knowledge Exchange
The Federation organizes regular workshops, strategic briefings, and high-level forums to support knowledge transfer, regulatory understanding, and operational excellence within the European defense community.
